"It is in the melodic construction, the smooth harmonies and the very soft production that Ten finds its trademark."
OCERIAN - 15.01.2019 -
Among the safe values of melodic hard rock are Ten's British band, led by Gary Hughes and supported since 2016 by Frontiers Records, a reference house for this still quite popular genre. "Gothica", the previous album, released less than a year and a half earlier, was not the best of the band's discography but nevertheless remained honourable. With "Illuminati", Ten continues its momentum with the themes of secret societies and history, nicely illustrated by Stan W. Decker who has worked for Primal Fear, Vulcan or Masterplan.

Gary Hughes' singing is always quite expressive but not very virulent. This lack of aggressiveness suits a music that is more classy than powerful. Indeed, it is in the melodic construction, the smooth harmonies and the very soft production that Ten finds its trademark. Some pieces manage to display a particularly well balanced and engaging melody as on 'The Esoteric Ocean', in which guitar solos follow one another with voluptuousness. It must be said that the instrumentation is really very neat and the presence of 3 guitars is salutary.

The first single, 'Jericho' is full of emphasis and orchestrations. It is a fairly effective and, obviously, very positive title, although it is too repetitive. The enchanting "Rosetta Stone" displays a new and exciting solo and terribly well-crafted vocal lines. The riffs are sometimes much more voluntarist, as with "Illuminati", whose intro will awaken more than one, comfortably nestled in the voluptuous and cottony of the previous songs. Guitarists have a great time on solos but also on riffs and choruses, which have a certain originality.

Ten cultivates the art of cooking his sense of melody in different ways. The British sound is quite rich and unfolds with a significant technical ease. "Illuminati" is a beautiful album in which the protagonists seem to really enjoy themselves.
