"Symphonic, epic, technical, "The Great Adventure" has all the qualities of a beautiful album by the tireless Neal Morse and his band!"
DARIALYS - 18.01.2019 -
We no longer present the tireless Neal Morse... Initially known for his central place in the progressive rock band Spock's Beard, formed in 1992, where he played with his brother Allan, the multi-instrumentalist has distinguished himself in many bands. Solo, with Transatlantic, with Flying Colors, or more recently with The Neal Morse Band, the American never sleeps. In recent years, he has particularly distinguished himself with the group that bears his name. After an excellent debut album, "The Grand Experiment", released in 2014, the tone was set. His successor, the double album "The Similitude Of A Dream", released two years later, presented the combo with an ambitious format that had delighted critics. "The Great Adventure", another double disc, seems to be following in his eldest son's footsteps.

The similarities between the two opuses can't be summed up only in their format or their almost identical covers. The first few seconds of the introductory title, 'Overture', featuring the song from 'Makes No Sense' that appeared on 'The Similitude Of A Dream', will confirm the analogy between the two albums.

As in any good Neal Morse record, we will find technical surges like on the track "Overture", a ten-minute instrumental piece. But the particularity of the band lies above all in the alternation between these tracks with others much more accessible. In the highlights of the album, we will also note the titles with a predominant symphonic dimension such as the grandiose "To The River" and its introductory organ with an eye to Yes's "Close To The Edge", or the epic "A Love That Never Dies" and its powerful choirs so characteristic of the band's sound. So many titles highlighting the mastery of musicians capable of distinguishing themselves in all registers, both in terms of technique and in terms of sensitivity and feeling.

But if this great adventure resembles its predecessor in the good points, it is the same in its weak points. With 22 tracks, it was to be expected that a certain number of tracks would not bring any real added value to the overall work, as in many double albums. This is the case with 'The Dream Continues', less inspired than his tracklist friends, or 'The Element Of Fear' and 'Child Of Wonder' which, like some other tracks, are more like transitions between two strong tracks. 'Welcome To The World 2' takes up the same refrain as 'Welcome To The World' and 'Beyond The Borders' is a remake of 'A Momentary Change' while the introductory riff of 'I Got To Run' is a copy and paste of 'Welcome To The World'... For me, this profusion of titles sow confusion and it would have been better to reduce the repetitions and less interesting parts even if not everyone will probably agree, as the exercise of this style is common to the training leader.

Let us not be picky either. Everything about the genius of Tennessee deserves a closer look, and "The Great Adventure" obviously won't disappoint its loyal fan club. It is not with this opus that Neal Morse will revolutionize his musical approach, but his unique style is so well performed that the listener will forgive him for the details previously reproached. "The Great Adventure" is therefore undoubtedly a strong new album of the musician's discography.
