"The tribute to the bands of the 80s is blinding and aims nothing more than to bring a communicative good mood."
LOLOCELTIC - 27.03.2019 -
Allergic to time travel, keep moving on. Originally from Germany, as their looks and stage names do not suggest, John Diva & The Rockets Of Love will take you back to the 80's. Former roadie and vocal coach, John Diva has connections and was able to entrust the production of this first opus to Michael Voss (Mad Max, Phantom 5, etc...) who also takes care of the mixing, all supervised by Chris Von Rohr (Krokus, Gotthard). In other words, behind the outrageously glamorous look of the quintet, there is something heavy and professionalism hidden behind this deliberately provocative facade.

With "Mama Said Rock Is Dead", it is the Sunset Boulevard and the Californian sun that are back and allow Steel Panther to feel a little less alone. Many legendary bands come to mind on several titles. Van Halen is back on a 'Lolita' that does not aim to be original but that throws an unstoppable chorus and first-class solos. On 'Rock'n' Roll Heaven', the nod to Guns n' Roses is so strong that a 'Knockin' On Heaven' Door' is placed in the lyrics for a result as catchy and slightly bluesy as ever. The rest remains the same with an omnipresent Whitesnake on 'Wild Life' which seems to be a demo of 'Gimme All Your Love', 'Blinded' on which hangs the shadow of Bon Jovi, or 'Dance Dirty' which seems to come out of the recording sessions of Def Leppard's 'Hysteria'.

What is the point of such an opus when the references are so numerous and significant (Poison on the ballad "Just A Night Away", Treat on "Get It On", AC/DC on "Long Legs In Leggings", etc...)? It's hard to say, except that we have to admit that pleasure and fun are the main themes of a dozen titles that make you happy. Because each time, the effect is immediate thanks to an irresistible energy and unstoppable choruses. The spirit of sex, drugs & rock'n'roll is present in lyrics that do not take themselves seriously but with a flawless execution and production of the same kind. The team at work here is made up of true professionals who master their art. The pair of guitarists composed of J.J. Love and Snake Rocket do not have to fade in the shadow of Eddie Van Halen and John Diva is a first-rate frontman.

So here is an opus that you have to take for what it is. Freshness and good humour are at the corner of every riff and chorus and the Teutonic quintet has no ambition at any time to present itself as original. The tribute to the bands that made the 80's happy is obvious and it is more than pleasant. The operation is therefore successful even if it should not be repeated too often in the future.
