"Joe Jackson generously lets us taste his birthday cake, Fool, creamy, sour and always surprising in taste."
ADRIANSTORK - 01.02.2019 -
At 64, Joe Jackson is still a mystery. Emeritus pianist, propelled little prince of the New Wave thanks to his inescapable 1982 album "Night And Day", Joe Jackson has never stopped expressing his musical talents over the years. All musical genres are recorded, kneaded, chewed to obtain the Joe Jackson paw/paste. Thus in 2012, the Englishman refused to lock himself in the straitjacket of the cover on an album tribute to Duke Ellington and changed the jazzman's music. In 2019, when the artist had 40 years of music to her credit, the release of a new album was a secret of Polichinelle. On the cover of the single 'Friend Better', the pianist covers himself his eye with a tarot card representing the madman. This madman who gives his name to the album is the only card without a tarot card number, as if the singer wanted to tell us that he is not a number but a free man and that he can go where his wishes call him.

Listening to a Joe Jackson album is like getting into a car driven by him and agreeing to be surprised along the way. "Fabulously Absolute" is a small rock contaminated by its energetic punk vocals (but ultra seductive on the choruses) in which a rock riff and a twirling keyboard are ed while the eponymous track amaze with its vocals at first aggressively monstrous and then refined on the choruses close to a traditional tune its Indian sounds that allow to launch a long jazzy jam where piano and bass answer each other. Less sophisticated but just as effective, the new single, "Friend Better" is a small rock pearl equipped with a chorus of anthology and 'Big Black Cloud' with its calibrated and formidable pianos makes us think that Joe Jackson is a first cousin (not English!) of William Sheller.

The clear and youthful voice has not been torn apart by the ravages of time and guides us through melancholic landscapes nimbed with fog. '32 Kisses' highlights moreover its warm and comforting timbre. on "Strange Land", Joe becomes a magician at the piano, punctuating the sheet music with bright keys. The route ends with a very contemplative and pastoral "Alchemy". When the last notes resonate, the silence that follows is still Joe Jackson's.

For his birthday, Joe Jackson has prepared a tailor-made album in which his eccentricity does not know the mid-life crisis and where his magnetic power is always formidable. Happy birthday, Joe, happy to have blown out your candles, but don't wait 10 years before producing a new masterpiece!
