"Mark Morton launches out solo and offers a fresh and varied album that sees him happily touching very diverse styles."
NOISE - 12.04.2019 -
The solo disc exercise is something as old as rock. Many have tried to express something other than what they do with their main band. Mark Morton took advantage of the low activity of Lamb Of God to launch himself with "Anesthetic", which he had been maturing for a long time. He opened his address book and put together an impressive cast of singers. A rich casting is not a guarantee of success but there is a sincerity that makes you want to believe in it.

It is important to begin exploration with 'Cross Off' recorded with Chester Bennington shortly before he ends his life. A real heavy bomb, it shows the singer's strength in a powerful register. The other tracks close to the sound of Lamb Of God are effective. Chuck Billy and Jake Oni are enjoying themselves on a 'The Never', thrash and groovy. Randy Blythe and Alissa White-Gluz give a powerfull prestation on 'The Truth Is Dead', which moves in a spirit close to death but also remind us that she excels in clear singing.

There are also some nice surprises in the form of UFOs that we didn't necessarily expect to hear from the guitarist. With 'Axis' sung by Mark Lanegan, Morton signs a rock track tailored to his deep and dark voice in a melancholic acoustic and electric register not far from the spirit of an Alice In Chains. With "Reveal", Morton ventures into jazz tinged with soul music and remarkable feeling. He is helped by the warm voice of Naeemah Maddox who has a groove worthy of an Amy Winehouse.

'Save Defiance' and 'Back From The Dead' see Mark venturing into a melodic US hardcore register. With Myles Kennedy and Josh Todd he is close to the sound they offer with Alter Bridge and Buckcherry. This adventure in hard US terrain is a success with catchy choruses and a beautiful melodic strength. Finally we will bring out'Imaginary Days' sung by Morton. Her raspy and nasal voice is interesting and this heavy but catchy track has an excellent riff.

"Anesthetic" is a nice surprise, it's much more than a transition record for Mark Morton. The guitarist reveals his influences and shows a certain talent in very different styles. In view of his success, it is to be hoped that he will propose a follow-up in the future.
