""The Valley" wants to leave a blackish identity, oscillating between melody and anger. Even if the opus does not renew the genre, it tries to escape it with honesty."
THIBAUTK - 15.03.2019 -
For the past thirteen years, the musical Ripper Whitechapel has been leaving bloodless bodies in the wake of his gloomy sounds. His musicians write a dark score where light and darkness, lyricism and terror, heavy and floating atmospheres mix. After six albums, the band delivers "The Valley", an abrasive work, with a sandpaper texture. The opus draws its strength from the origins of death, feeds on singular melodies and gives rise to a pleiad of emotions.

'When a Demon Défiles a Witch' starts with power even if it sometimes offers soft arpeggios. The charm works immediately. 'Black Bear' is based on a cyclical rhythm, the voice is monstrous and the melody hypnotic. Then "Hickory Creek" starts serenely as screams quickly invade the sound space. This surge of raw and brutal intensity gives rise to the shivers of an almost masochistic pleasure.

'Forgiveness Is Weakness' brings a black touch crossed by a dark melody that carries it beyond a simple dump of hatred, the opposition between tenderness and violence is captivating here. 'Doom Woods' is led by a dark but soothing guitar. A sensual pleasure awaits the listener at the end of this melancholic journey. "Third Depth" begins peacefully with a clear voice, a bare guitar and a jumping drum kit that encourages contemplation. Then 'The Other Side' covers the space with brutal double pedals that counterbalance the slow and melodic riffs. Whitechapel masters oppositions and variations, even if these unspoken pleasures are as confusing as they are charming.

Finally, 'Lovelace' which builds around a fast riff, builds a stifling climate and an intense groove. Or "We Are One" which offers a groovy drum set, even if the hoarse vocals scatter the track with scary touches. This groove disrupts habits and provides a pleasure that is more difficult to enjoy.

Contrast, groove and darkness are the leitmotiv of the opus. Sometimes simple and bewitching, sometimes very violent, full of variations, groove or exuberant guitars, "The Valley" wants to leave a blackish identity, oscillating between melody and anger and finally finding its balance in bare passages. Even if the opus does not renew the genre, it tries to escape it with honesty.
