"As unexpected as it is unstoppable, this comeback of the legendary trio has proved to be irresistible in terms of efficiency and energy for an imperial return of the most famous stray cats on the planet."
LOLOCELTIC - 12.07.2019 -
Here's one we didn't see coming! The Stray Cats had regularly given us the opportunity to have an exceptional reformation at various concerts and Slim Jim Phantom regularly joined Brian Setzer on stage during some of the guitarist/singer's tours, but the release of a new opus was unexpected. However, 26 years after "Original Cool" (1993), the legends of Long Island are back with an album celebrating their 40th anniversary. Launched with the help of Peter Collins (The Brian Setzer Orchestra, Bon Jovi, Gary Moore...) in production and Vance Powell in sound (Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown, Clutch...), the new opus is simply called "40".

First of all, the three friends, at 60 years of age, are showing incredible positive energy. Imparable choruses, feline screams, irresistible tempi and fiery soli: several tracks seem to come from the first eponymous opus of stray cats, which already has a little over forty years on it ("Stray Cats" - 1981). The single "Cat Fight (Over Dog Like Me)" or "Three Time's A Charm" have nothing to envy to "Rock This Town", while "I've Got Love If You Want It" even sees Brian Setzer cover part of the solo of "Ubangi Stomp". On the other hand, the darker "Cry Danger" plunges us back into the atmosphere of a "Runaway Boys" or a "Rumble In Brighton". More bluesy but still as a harbinger and unstoppable,'Rock It Off' refers to the time of "Gonna Ball" (1981).

The other benefit of this opus is its ability to bring out the most fierce doom fan out of depression. It is impossible not to continue singing each chorus at full speed after only one or two listenings. In this way, the leaded blues of 'I Attract Trouble' revolves around you like a deceitful cat ready to jump on its prey and never lets you go once it holds you. As for the groovy and fighters "That's Messed Up" and "I'll Be Looking Out For You", their gimmicks will obsess you until late at night to make you scream in the dark alleys. Nothing is missing from the panoply of the cats, who also pay homage to the "Shadows" with the instrumental "Desperado", which does not hide its reference to the "Apache" of the British pioneers.

It is impossible to resist the wave of happiness triggered by this album that we no longer expected. The Stray Cats directly crush the competition and remind us that they are the bosses. It is not by chance that they are legends or that their leader is an icon in the guitarists' firmament. These guys have an irreplaceable groove and energy and "40" turns out to be much more than just an event album, settling directly on the top of the trio's discography.
