Last Flight to Pluto is a Welsh band that has long evolved as a cover band of all kinds, from Adele to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and finally released its first album in 2016. During the realization of its second effort, "A Dr op in the Ocean", the band was noticed by a certain Rob Reed (Magenta among others) who decided to release it on his label White Knight Records.

Claiming in particular Rush's influences, the band led by the singer Alice Freya evolves in a neo-progressive register in the broad sense of the term, as the developed climates and references to the genre are numerous. On the other hand, the filiation with Canadians can be considered as regards the energetic parts that scatter the six compositions.

The opening of the album by "Masheena" immediately sets the tone of this eclecticism. After an introduction inviting cosmic keyboards and then a big guitar chorus supported by a very present rhythm section, the calm settles down to give way to Alice Freya's somewhat mutinous voice, accompanied by an acoustic guitar, which will lead the song to the regions frequented by Magenta, before ending with a very rhythmic... "Apocalypse in 9/8' (Genesis for those who have a memory gap).

The rest will evolve in the same varied vein, with compositions giving pride of place to melodies that often explode during catchy choruses. Electric choruses populate the instrumental passages, as well as the inevitable solos of guitars interspersed with biting riffs, without however having the invasive and systematic side that can be found in many neoprogressive productions.

The band also brings some original touches like the jazzy finale of "Morning Glow", or in "The Kings are Dead", a track carried by a buzzing bass on which the guitars come to knit like a "light" Angus Young before a very progressive rise in power leading to an exciting chorus. The whole remains very coherent, sometimes even a little too much and the surprise effect quickly fades away when faced with the somewhat systematic structure of the various titles, without however reducing the performances of the band's various components, first and foremost Alice Freya's remarkable interpretation.

Without being the most original band in the world, Last Flight to Pluto offers us a record of excellent quality, technically impeccable both in its interpretation and its realization, in a genre unfortunately already very crowded with many similar productions. However, the pleasure is there when you listen to these 50 minutes. What more could you ask for?
