TONYB - 17.06.2019 -
If Ed Wynne's name may not say much to many of our readers, no doubt that Ozric Tentacles' name necessarily speaks to the ears of anyone interested in the adventure of progressive rock, so much has the flagship band of space-prog left its mark on the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st, even if its activity has been significantly reduced in recent years. Nevertheless, it took more than 35 years for his mentor to embark on a solo adventure, with the release of "Shimmer into Nature" in 2019.

Seen by its author as a refuge from the outside world, this album can be compared to a contemplation of landscapes that are suspected to be magnificent (its elaboration took place while Ed Wynne lived in a somewhat isolated way in Colorado at an altitude of more than 2000 m. above sea level), but also to a form of soothing introspection illustrated among other things by the album's very flower-powerful artwork.
As it was a solo album, Ed Wynne took care of everything or almost everything throughout these 42 minutes, except for a few percussion and sound effects left to his guests' discretion.

'Glass Staircase' inaugurates this cake in a very dynamic way, placing its different loops on a hypnotic and melodic bass, all punctuated by a few guitar interventions. Of course, the Ozric Tentacles leg is found at almost every moment of the album, whether in the most energetic repetitive moments, or in its more experimental aspects that guide for example 'Wherble' and its frenetic rhythms.
Still on the rhythmic level, the reggae syncopations so characteristic of the group appear in "Travel Dust", for our greatest happiness. However, the tone may be lighter than usual, as the sounds used give off an almost pastoral atmosphere, even if the space-rock and its repetitive melodies are never very far away.
The occasional guitar interventions that come to rest on top of all this electronics refer us to the work of Manuel Göttsching and Ashra Tempel, even though the repetitive side is less accentuated on this album.

Finally, Ed Wynne offers us an album in line with his group's discography, tending to confirm the probable dormancy of his group for the benefit of solo productions. Fans of the genre will appreciate the five compositions presented, while we can only advise others to listen with curiosity.
