"Equipped with a style that could be described as out of age, these "Apocryphal Tales" take us on paths that are certainly well marked but so well travelled that magic sets in immediately"
TONYB - 18.06.2019 -
Originally from Belgium, and now in its second incarnation after having published 2 albums in its version 1.0, Taliesyn II offers us its "Apocryphal Tales", a concept album narrating a fantastic epic in the forest of Nerival. Around the twins Julien and Geoffroy Mary, the great novelty of this new formation is the presence on one half of the songs of the so charismatic Jean-Philippe Suzan (Gens de la Lune).

After the opening, composed of disturbing noises that set the mood, "Les Lanciers Noirs" began the album with a very rock dynamic, inviting guitar riffs and Hammond organ, the analogy of the band's name with Deep Purple's first album being anything but insignificant.
Indeed, throughout the 68 minutes of the album, Taliesyn II draws us a real ode to the rock and progressive music of the 70s. Alternating dynamic compositions with memorable melodies ('En Pleine Campagne','A Bout de Course','Kelester') with more convoluted ones, the concept is unfolded in the form of short titles that follow each other very naturally.

Carried by Jean-Philippe Suzan's voice, the story takes on very evocative impulses, as he knows how to vary his register according to the moods proposed by the two musicians. And far from being limited to an immediate and effective rock, they also offer us on the side of the hard way Deep Purple with guitars that scrape honey cages, jazz ('Terres Conquises','La Marche Sanglante'), but also progressive in good and due form with at the top of the gondola the splendid'Orage' which, after a dark mid-tempo start, then declines into a jouissive instrumental frenzy.

Beyond the simple references to the Anglo-Saxon rock of the seventies, the scents of the French masters of progressive music, Ange and Mona Lisa, regularly tickle our ears, the vocal analogies serving in this case as an undeniable marker for a return to the jubilant past.

Equipped with a style that could be described as out of age, these "Apocryphal Tales" take us on paths that are certainly well marked but so well travelled that magic sets in immediately. The quality of the composition and interpretation is a final tribute to this golden era, and this cake deserves much more than a distracted ear.
