"Nothing revolutionary in all this, but a piece to be taken into consideration both for the musical beauty it develops and in the so important message it tries to convey."
TONYB - 17.09.2019 -
After the surprise effect of the first album and the superb confirmation provided by his successor "The Final Breath Before November", it took 6 years to see the duo formed by Eric Blackwood (Steve Rothery's former roadie) and Pete Trewavas release the third real Edison's Children album, composed of a single 67-minute piece divided into 14 consecutive movements, entitled "Washed Away".
"The Disturbance Fields" is a timely account of a human being's struggle against the wrath and reactions of our Earth to the outrages we inflict on it.
For this new epic track, the duo is completed by Rick Armstrong (son of a well-known astronaut), and a drum set shared between the faithful Henry Rogers (Mostly Autumn among others) and a certain Lisa Wetton.

Those who do not yet know the universe developed by the group will very quickly enter a universe mixing the scents of Pink Floyd and Marillion, a symphonic-atmospheric trend. And what could be more brilliant than the magnificent diptych 'A Random Occurrence' / 'A Random Disturbance' to illustrate all this? The melody is just incredible, the symphonic keyboards in devil and Sir Trewavas' bass hums with happiness, perfectly mixed with the ensemble. The icing on the cake is that a few solo guitar flights in the Aribag style add a little more spice to the subject.

However, far from being satisfied with these superb arabesques, Edisons' Children will gradually take us to wilder, more uncluttered lands, perfectly in line with the theme of the album.
It is for example "Asphyxiation" which, after a bare opening on a very present bass background will develop an aggressive rhythmic and guitars. It is also "Indigenous" whose strident sounds evoke the urgency of the moment and take us away from the polite symphonism mentioned above. As for the title "Into the Dead Calm", Roger Waters would undoubtedly appreciate its finery without moderation.
But, chase away the natural and it will come back at a gallop:'The Confluence' and its odd syncopated rhythms send us straight back to the Marillion era of "Clutching at Straws", while'The Surge' synthesizes all the influences of the founding duo.

While remaining faithful to their origins and close to the style developed on the previous album, Eric Blackwood and Pete Trewavas bring some interesting new features on "The Disturbance Fields", thus allowing to digest this magnum opus in one go despite some lengths. Nothing revolutionary in all this, but a piece to be taken into consideration both for the musical beauty it develops and in the so important message it tries to convey.
