"Hosted by Tristania's singer, "Last Place On Earth" offers a gothic metal stuffed with pop with flawless plastic but far from being essential."
CHILDERIC THOR - 09.10.2019 -
Ardours is a name that will probably not tell you anything. This is not surprising since "Last Place On Earth" is his business card. However, once an instrumental prologue whose banality is not a good omen has passed, the female voice poses the charming scenery of a gothic rock evoking distant memories, those of a Tristania that has disappeared for too long from the radar screens.

However, don't expect Ardours to mark the return of Vibeke Stene, the Norwegians' first female singer. So it's Mariangela Demurtas we're talking about. This is also good news, as the beautiful one has her part to play in the success of "Rubycon" (2010) and "Darkest White" (2013), the last two signs of life of the Scandinavians. However, the relationship with Tristania ends there (or almost) because there are no growls here, but only these sweet yet powerful ('Therefor I Am') and not devoid of emotions ('Truths') vocals.

The brunette having covered the music of her main home port with an almost pop varnish, it is naturally that Ardours sometimes flirts with these slightly marshmallow scents ('The Mist','No One Is Listening'). If in its best moments "Last Place On Earth" can remind us of The Gathering, Lacuna Coil or even contemporary Tiamat, like on "Totally" or "Last Moment", the whole can hardly escape a certain softness by confusing mawkishness and delicacy.

Relying on the work of the multi-instrumentalist Kris Laurent and on Mariangela's voice, ideal to declaim these energetic songs but not too much, we cannot dispute the beautiful behaviour and effectiveness of this trial run without recognizing its indispensable character. This metal with a singer stuffed with pop remains attractive but, in addition to the fact that it lacks personality, it is hard to see how "Last Place On Earth" could find its audience, too hard for some and really not enough for others!
