"If "The Ghost Xperiment" seems easy to access, its secrets reveal themselves over time. That is certainly why it leaves a disturbing feeling."
THIBAUTK - 10.10.2019 -
Four years ago, the Germans of Vanden Plas closed the diptych inspired by the novels "Les chroniques des immortels". Music Waves had been impressed by these albums and their dark and romantic atmosphere. The vocals were warm, the six-strings moving, the synthesizers drew a devastated landscape, the bass lines were intense and the drums full of groove. Here comes this "The Ghost Xperiment" whose arrival raise great expectations among fans. The concept of this new production is centered around Gideon Grace, a desperate character, who must fight against evil figures and his intimate demons after the loss of his beloved Ivy...

Like a dark film,'Devils' Poetry' begins with unadorned chords, then keyboards impose their presence. This step is a departure from the band's composition habits, as the instruments sound quite unusual and give an impression of strangeness. It is also the darkness that invades the track and plunges the spectator into a melancholy reinforced by the heavy guitar and the throbbing keyboards. The introduction to 'Fall from the Skies' begins with a crystal clear piano and a soft voice. When the guitar wakes up and the rage intensifies, the track then gives an impression of struggle and anger. Throughout the speech, the ears are mistreated by whistling harmonics that intensify the discomfort. As for the tempo, it is unstable and oscillates between appeasement and brutality, also reinforcing the idea of internal crisis.

The guitar of "Three Ghosts" stretches the melody of "The Phantoms Of Prends-Toi-Gardes", then hesitates between inner peace (stripped arpeggios) and incisive heaviness (leaded riffs), while the piano rests in a space of tranquility. The central figure is like stuck between hell and paradise. 'Cold December Night' - which reminds us a lot of "Chist-0" - sails in territories marked out by the band for years: the guitar flies to technical skies while the voice offers medium intonations characteristic of Andy. This track reminds us of "Beyond Daylight" which had disturbed the fans or "Christ-0". 'The Phantoms of Prends-Toi-Garde' seems simple in appearance and refers to "Far Off Grace", especially when the piano wraps it in a soothing softness. 'The Ghost Xperiment' then finishes the work with class. The heavy guitar and its bare counterpart play on equal terms, as if the band did not want to choose between fury and tenderness and let the listener make his own idea.

Vanden Plas offers us a complex and obvious progame, without ever falling into the easy way. Like Darkwater, he favours efficiency and apparent simplicity over complexity. "The Ghost Xperiment" is both a big surprise and a small disappointment. Filled with emotions, power and a disarming progressive sincerity, its melodic potential is quickly revealed. But despite this amazing guitar playing, despite Andy's impeccable voice and unstoppable rhythm section, the album is destabilizing like "Beyond Daylight", because it is not where we expect it to be. Indeed the band chose not to make a pale copy of the two previous albums, but to deliver a "The Ghost Xperiment" which seems easy to access, but whose secrets reveal themselves over time. That is certainly why it leaves a disturbing feeling.
