"Despite a production that does not pay tribute to the musicians' work, this new album by Sonata Arctica is of a writing finesse rarely achieved"
CALGEPO - 12.09.2019 -
In 2019, Sonata Arctica celebrates its 20th anniversary. Few bands can achieve this longevity nowadays. During this career, the band has tried to evolve by proposing to come out of melodic metal, which it was able to restore in the early 2000s. However, these attempts have often been poorly perceived by the specialized press and by some of the fans because of an hesitation between really diving into a heavy tinge of speed mainstream and keeping a powerful melodic base ("Pariah's Child"). These tensions ended with "The Ninth Hour" which, thanks to a promising theme linked to ecology, allowed the band to regain its place in the foreground of melodic metal groups.

For this new album, Sonata Arctica is part of the evolution of the previous album, with the white succeeding the green on the cover of absolute purity. After an introductory title reassuring on the melodico-speedo-heavy heritage of the band, the furrow taken from a more melodic research is confirmed with a "Whirlwind" that wants to be more rock and melodic than metal with an irresistible chorus well interpreted by Elias Viljanen. However, something seems to be a little off in this positive feeling: the production. If the band's desire is to record almost under live conditions, the mix seriously lacks the energy and power to give the work its full dimension. This one then appears much too balanced without letting the many subtleties show through to the ear.

It's a shame, especially since the disc, which has as its theme Nordic mythology and its legends, is of a very beautiful variety while succeeding in not losing coherence, alternating FM compositions ('Cold' with martial drums but somewhat basic) and dark ballads that bear well found vaporous synthetic layers ('The Last Of The Lambs'). Speed, even metal and solos are rare on this relatively calm and extremely accessible album where the melodic aspect, familiar with (powerful) pop, stands out ('Who Failed The Most). If the compositions are relatively straightforward, do not denigrate all the work done behind, as this kind of title is sometimes more difficult to write than a convoluted title that is much less readable. The challenge is not to fall into caricature and to bring enough relief to make it a success, which is what this new album is all about.

Among the eleven titles, some are easily distinguished. The Finns offer themselves the luxury of an amazing instrumental personified by the playful "Ismo's Got Good Reactors" (which makes a kind of bridge between East and West) reminiscent of Dream Theater's "Dance Of Eternity" in all its proportions. This title has the merit of bringing a little madness into a whole that seems somewhat melancholic. The other track to note is the very beautiful "The Raven Still Flies" whose 7 minutes 39 hide a well-structured progressive architecture with different melodic parts that intertwine intelligently between them.

Despite a production that does not pay tribute to the musicians' work at its peak, this new album by Sonata Arctica is of a writing finesse rarely achieved, bringing an additional stone to a significant structure built over the past twenty years by the Finns. "Taviyö" with its ice-cold cover will not throw a chill between the band and its fans and will allow them with its apparent softness and readability to win new ones.

Le plus mauvais des démarrages avec un titre speed mélo ultra convenu qui ne donne qu'une envie, aller écouter autre chose. Une production plate et des compositions surannées. Je suis désolé mais c'est pas bon.
