""For The Demented" sees Annihilator excel with a powerful thrash full of unstoppable melodies."
NOISE - 10.11.2017 -
"Suicide Society" was a catharsis that allowed Jeff Waters to overcome the surprise departure of his singer, Dave Padden. If it wasn't Annihilator's best album, it was in a correct average, proving that the band had a future. Barely two years later, after another live show and a series of messy concerts, he is back with "For The Demented", his sixteenth album with Jeff still behind the microphone. Reinvigorated, the Canadian guitarist seems determined to fight it out. He produced this album in duo with his bass player Rich Hinks, a rare thing for a solitary Waters.

Presented in an aggressive cover, the disc first takes us by the throat in a fierce way with "Twisted Lobotomy". Close to an 80's old school thrash sound, this track is a slap in the face: Jeff is aggressive vocally and musically and the band delivers boiling riffs and solos. 'One To Kill' keeps an abrasive tone with angry guitar parts and an equally furious vocals. After this punch, Annihilator will calm the game and vary the subject, Waters having fun blurring the cards by combining incisive passages with catchy breaks.

'The Demon You Know' is a vicious song that sees Jeff become a storyteller. 'Phantom Asylum' creates an airy atmosphere on the solos while 'Not All All There' is sometimes even dancing, bordering on funky with a rather dark air break as well. These three songs of course have a thrash frame but they gain a lot by these catchy aspects. And it's not over yet, Waters offers with 'Pieces Of You' a ballad as he likes them, telling a dark and gloomy story in a serious tone and with great sensitivity.  'The Way' returns to a direct, more rocky and catchy style, leaning towards a big rock worthy of a Van Halen with AC/DC riffs. Finally, in the middle of this crazy patchwork, 'Altering The Alter' shatters everything in a very powerful thrash spirit.

Jeff Waters has undoubtedly recovered his shape, plus an accomplice in the person of Rich Hinks. "For The Demented" is brilliant, fresh, varied and cheerful. He sees Annihilator excel with a powerful thrash full of unstoppable melodies. The band is now relaunched as a phoenix that time and hardship never seem to weaken.
