"To be recommended to all lovers of unstoppable choruses and communicative energy!"
LOLOCELTIC - 13.11.2019 -
In the family of rock bands hit by a curse, here is Crashdiet, who will have had four singers in five albums. After Dave Lepard's suicide and H. Olliver Twisted's eviction, it was Simon Cruz's turn to leave the frontman position vacant as he left his colleagues on tour in Japan in 2015, without giving any explanation. But Crashdiet's Swedes who are not the type to give up, recruited Gabriel Keyes in 2017. At the end of 2019, here comes the first recording of the new line-up  awaited by lovers of sleaze and glam.

If this instability is common in the rock'n' roll way of life scene, it has also often prevented some bands from confirming the hopes placed in them. Let's bet that if the Scandinavian band succeeds in keeping its new singer, the confirmation could well be within this new opus full of energy and catchphrases.

The first reason comes from the combo's now assertive personality which offers a strong tribute to the cult groups of the 1980s even if beyond the powerful and well-established production of his time, its compositions bear no resemblance to attempts at cloning. Yet, it's hard not to believe you're on Mötley Crüe's album "Dr Feelgood" (1989) with the big riff of the eponymous track that launches the hostilities by crushing everything in its path. On 'Idiots', it is W.A.S.P. that we think of with a very sharp title. In addition, the video clip of this title clearly refers to a legendary interview with Chris Holmes by his pool while he was still soaked in alcohol and other substances.

The hymn 'We Are The Legion' will delight Skid Row fans of the "Youth Gone Wild" era (1989). On the other hand, the attempt to pay tribute to Def Leppard's ballads with a "Waiting For Your Love" in electro attire is handicapped by keyboards that are a little too kitsch. Finally, the finale composed of "Stop Weirding Me Out" and "Filth & Flowers" refers to the best hours of Twisted Sister, especially since Gabriel Keyes' voice is reminiscent of that of Dee Snider, both powerful and slightly rasped. We know worse as references. Adding to all these references a Metallica-like finish on "Idiots", one would think that the Swedes would join the long list of bands locked up in the 80s and content themselves with serving a reheated version of what was successfully practiced at the time. However, by adding a pinch of punk essential to any self-respecting quality sleaze ('Crazy','Parasite' and its haunting chorus,'Reptile') and some electronic sounds (Into The Wild') and by mixing all these ingredients with talent, Crashdiet manages to offer a very personal cocktail.

Once again, the Stockholm Quartet is recovering from its trials with talent and energy. With a varied opus combining power and melody, it is to be hoped that "Rust" marks the beginning of a fertile period. To be recommended to all lovers of unstoppable choruses and communicative energy!
