"Far from being the expected revolution in power metal and renewing the genre, "Welcome To Paradise" is a record that will nevertheless give you a good time."

Reading the list of Northtale members, the combo sounds like what we call in the musical jargon of being a supergroup: Christian Ericksson (Twilight Force) on vocals, Bill Hudson (UDO) on guitar and Patrick Johansson (Malmsteen) behind the drums. The band thus formed shows its ambition to throw the cat among the pigeons in the  power metal world.

This sought-after novelty won't come in any case from the cover, which is very typical for the genre: Nordic (of course), blue and snowy. But it doesn't matter what the shape is as long as the bottom confirms this ambition. And that's where the problem lies. The whole sounds too classic ('Welcome To Paradise') to confirm this long awaited ardour and we find everything that makes us like or dislike this style: riffs as powerful as an icebreaker and a lively guitar thanks to Bill's flawless dexterity, a voice that climbs towards the high notes and a fast rhythm.

The 13 tracks (a few of them) are very efficient but they are as energetic as they are anecdotal or common so much they are close to what Edguy, Powerwolf or Hammerfall do as well. However, some tracks stand out by their particular charm, notably 'Follow Me' with its slightly symphonic aspect and its beautiful guitar solo inspired by classical music, the ballad 'Way Of The Light' in which Ericksson sings in a plaintive way to then light up during its development or 'Everyone's A Star' which reminds a little bit the hard rock of HEAT or Fate.

However, this enumeration is not enough to confirm the will to revolutionize or renew power metal and this despite a good production and an interpretation without any flaw. It lacks the spark that could have ignited the fire of an evolution of a style that locks itself into its own clichés.
