Two years after his first album, The Dark Element sets the scene again with this "Songs The Night Sings". Annette Olzon, a lyrical singer and a former Nightwish singer, and Jani Liimatainen, a Finnish and professional guitarist who has worked for Sonata Arctica and Stratovarius, are once again the thinking heads. Two years ago, the eponymous opus had captivated the hearts of fans of melodic-symphonic metal with a pop tendency. Will it be the same for this record ?

The sound walls of the building are still as imposing as ever and its compositions are once again of a formidable symphonic tone. Pop trends have not abandoned the architectural style of construction either, nor have the melodic qualities of the compositions deserted its foundations. This second test is therefore once again perfectly calibrated for fans of Within Temptation and Delain.

In this game of comparisons, it is nevertheless necessary to specify that if the telluric riffs characteristic of these formations are well present heret, the pop tendencies are here more systematic and the mid-tempi more numerous ('If I Have A Heart','You Will Learn'). Some tracks are even dancing on some passages ('Silence Between The Words' and the eponymous track in particular). Moreover, on the videos available from the band, Annette is often filmed in dance mode.

Particular attention is paid to the introductions to the most metal tracks, instantly attracting the listener in the symphonic wake of the score ('Not Your Monster','The Pallbearer Walks Alone','Pills On My Pillow','When It All Comes Down' and the eponymous track). There are also two moments of pure joy in "Songs The Night Sings", two calm and poignant compositions. 'To Whatever End' and 'I Have To Go', a ballads of twilight melancholy that takes you to the edge of the precipice and tears, will long pursue you as these tracks exude a palpable emotion.

The Dark Element has just offered us a successful successor to their first opus. Of a less metallic nature, this "Songs The Night Sings" is however just as melodious and that is a real performance considering the heights reached by the previous record.
