"A stocky and direct album, "Evolution" follows in the footsteps of its predecessors, even if its heavier than usual aggressiveness may surprise or even disappoint some."
CHILDERIC THOR - 06.11.2019 -
Not content with having released a double album with "Prevail" I and II and especially with having made it a success, a challenge that few bands can boast about, the Canadians are already back, only a little over a year after delivering the second part of their diptych. We can't stress enough how much Kobra And The Lotus deserves better than the simple "metal with female singer" label stuck on its charming face because, on the one hand, it clearly dominates the competition within a crowded niche, and on the other hand because it is so much more than that, being a big heavy metal band in itself!

While the beautiful woman and her musicians sometimes succumb to symphonic or sweeter sirens, the emphasis is always on both a form of feline aggressiveness and an almost dramatic depth, two characters that shape a more assertive identity than it seems and that this sixth album should fix permanently. Since "High Priestess", the quintet seems to have found its way, between heavy and gothic metal, all adorned with this typically American touch, as the famous "Wash Away", moving and powerful ballad as Evanescence would still like to be able to write.

However, this breathing remains an exception within a bellicose ensemble whose delicacy has been rejected. Helped in their destruction by producer Michael Baskette (Trivium, Alter Bridge), the Canadians like to show their muscles as never before, even if it means forcing (a little too much) the image of "Burn" (which is not a cover of Deep Purple) and "We Come Undone". Strong rhythmic and guitars as big as high voltage cables give these two tracks a bloody and modern strength, to which the very progressive "Wounds" with orientalizing vocals is also attached.

Built all along on this offensive substrate, "Evolution" nevertheless gives pride of place to the racy curves and unifying melodies, like "Circus", "Thundersmith" or "Liar" that always drapes a distant despair. The obvious keystone of the building, Kobra Paige dominates the game, wrapping its lascivious charm and tinged with bitterness the pure jewels that are "Get The F*ck Out Of Here" or the stormy "In The End" and its orchestral finale, without overlooking the already named "Wash Away".

A stocky and direct album, "Evolution" follows in the footsteps of its predecessors, even if its heavier than usual aggressiveness may surprise or even disappoint some. Kobra And The Lotus nevertheless asserts its superiority a little more by adding to its burnt and gothic heavy, a more modern sound.
