"With his jazz-rock close to holdsworth stuck in the corridors of time, Yuval Ron struggles to convince."

Yuval Ron is an Israeli musician who has written two albums with his band Residents Of The Future. The release of his first album "Somewhere In This Universe, Somebody Hits A Drum" under his own name and on his own label Wrong Notes Music is an opportunity to discover the work of this musician with a colourful personality.

Let's not be fooled by the title of the album, Yuval is a guitarist and his album an exercise in six-string virtuosity. But this title has a double function which is to remind us of Yuval's affinity with everything related to science fiction and to support all the promotion that is made on Marco Minnemann's presence on the drums. It is not uncommon for the German to make appearances on other musicians' albums. But what could have triggered his participation in the album of this unsuspected guitarist? There are at least two things that seem to have contributed to Marco's decision, it is the style practiced and the offbeat side of Yuval's character. First there is this funny way of dressing up as an NASA astronaut suit (although Paul Gilbert did it before him) and this taste for an aesthetic retro space opera that can be admired in his videos. Finally, the style is jazz fusion, a genre that pleases Marco Minnemann and gives him complete freedom to express the full extent of his breathtaking playing.

"Somewhere In This Universe, Somebody Hits A Drum" develops a difficult to access fusion, to the obvious kinship with the music of Yuval's master Allan Holdsworth to whom he dedicates the title "The Discovery Of Phoebe". In the sounds too, Yuval exaggerates the filiation by multiplying dated textures and keyboard sounds sometimes bordering on kitsch ('I Believe In Astronauts'). The mix becomes very doubtful when in the same song a guitar is superimposed on top of each other, which sounds like a video game and voices close to the incantation ('Somewhere In This Universe, Somebody Hits A Drum'). Yuval's music is very often hermetic to the image of the dark "Gravitational Lensing", and the surprise of the first seconds quickly gives way to a deep boredom as on the slow and (empty) sidereal "Kuiper Belt" or "WiFi In Emerald City" whose second part is only saved by Marco Minnemann's rhythmical prowess. 'The Discovery Of Phoebe' and 'I Believe In Astronauts' redress the balance in extremis, the first one carried by its dimension of tribute to Allan Holdsworth and its melodic finesse finally found, and the second by its diversity.

"Somewhere In This Universe, Somebody Hits A Drum" is destined to nostalgic people of an era who will be able to find an ersatz of spirit and a semblance of atmosphere. We cannot even console ourselves with Marco Minnemann's interventions, who suffer from a disastrous mix that reduces all the nuances of his instrument to a tasteless soup. But let's be optimistic, somewhere in the universe a form of intelligence will find a real interest in this record.
