""Why Me? Why Not" proves that he does not usurp the title of excellent songwriter that gives pop all its meaning, that of delicate pleasure when listening to bewitching and suggestive melodies."
CALGEPO - 22.11.2019 -
It is hardly an exaggeration to note that Liam Gallagher is often better known for his escapades and mood swings than for his music. And yet the disputes with his brother, the last minute cancellations of concerts cannot eclipse the Britishman's talent and know-how to compose gleaming pop songs that have allowed him to restore the style to its former glory through Oasis but also on his own.

Liam's contribution to the rebirth of a wasting britpop in the early 1990s should not be overlooked. This has led him to be considered as the illegitimate child of John Lennon's spirit from which he draws the name of this new album. "Why Me? Why Not" is a contraction of the titles of two drawings, one acquired by Lennon in an art exhibition and a gift from Yoko Ono for the other.

Far from imitating the illustrious elder, Liam brings an undeniable inhabited presence with his inimitable way of interpretation in addition to his writing quality. This personality jumps out at you right away with a terrifying riff that is topped off by a few harmonica notes. 'Shockwave' is well named with its pop rock line and Liam's voice more involved than usual. If this first track is somewhat subversive, the next two tracks calm the game down: 'One Of Us' returns to a traditional pop style with pretty violin strings that bring a little more lightness and 'Once' follows the electro acoustic ballad style, at first quite psychedelic, accompanied by very well arranged strings.

This beginning of the album gives the feeling that Liam is very concerned by his project by proposing a journey in what English music has done best. There is no artifice in this proposed work, he does not lie about the merchandise or what he thinks of himself, so that no track appears weak. The album is both varied and coherent enough not to decrease in listening intensity or interest. We go from 'Now That I've Found You', to the shimmering female choruses that irresistibly blend into the title to the energetic 'Halo' on the piano that recalls Elton John's ardour to the electric 'Be Still' with its unstoppable refrain.

Liam is back at the forefront. He himself is a paradox, capable of throwing everything away and at the same time, thinking and applying himself to everything he undertakes musically. Liam Gallagher is above all an artist, a creative in the most honest sense of the word, who under his indomitable air hides a man certainly with exacerbated sensitivity, unfathomable and more complex than he wants it to appear. In the end "Why Me? Why Not" proves that he does not usurp the title of excellent songwriter that gives pop all its meaning, that of delicate pleasure when listening to bewitching and suggestive melodies.
