"The EP is actually a short compilation of the band's old songs reworked with a new singer."
ADRIANSTORK - 26.11.2019 -
In the 90s and 2000s, Beyond The Labyrinth made a name for itself by releasing muscular rock albums that shared some connections with Arena. While the departure of the singer Jo De Boeck was whistling at the end of the game, our Belgians decided against all expectations to restart with a new singer, Filip Lemmens.

The EP is actually a short compilation of the band's old songs reworked with a new singer. Filip Lemmens is not a stranger met at the crossroads of chance. HeHe has already worked in Hard Rock (Double Diamond, Fireforce). His voice is more calm than his predecessor's, and he does not seek to show his power, but on the contrary to get as close as possible to the listener, like an accomplice storyteller, delighted to share his black stories ('In Flander Fields', whose possessed interpretation surpasses the somewhat dull original). Geert Fieuw, the band's driving guitarist, always makes sparks, performing little high-flying melodic acts like in 'In Flander Fields', a sound landscape of a desolate flat country with a little Deep Purple spirit. Keyboards, including the Hammond organ, occupy a central place, sometimes embarking on fearsome escapades ('Shine').

Ideally, it is 'Brand New Start' that launches the album, as if the band didn't want to delay the call for novelty and nip in the bud a suspense that would not be necessary. The calm and falsely peaceful singing is capable of unleashing itself, and Geert Fieuw takes the opportunity to show that he is still able to get out of the dishevelling solos. If this track makes us salivate, the EP ends up making us disappointed, the balance between creations and rewritings not being ideal.

Beyond The Labyrinth, which we thought had been lost forever, is well alive. With a new singer, the band revisits its old glories to the sound of prog hard rock, but without ever entering into long developments. However, it may be regrettable that the band did not choose to launch into a void by directly recording a new album....
