Hollywood Undead is a band mixing rap and alternative metal since 2005. As soon as their first album, "Swan Songs", was released, the band was ranked on the Billboard 2000 and instantly hit the charts. Twelve years later, with the release of a new album, "New Empire, Vol 1", Johnny 3 Tears, singer, guitarist and bassist, explains that he has tried to reinvent the band's approach that has been established until now.

What strikes you on the first listen is the immediacy of the songs. They are made to have an immediate effect on the listener. 'Time Bomb', the first track, fits perfectly into this description with a super catchy chorus in the early Linkin Park style and its rapping verses. The choruses are so much highlighted that the verses generally have little flavour in comparison, as is the case on the single 'Already Dead' or on 'Enemy'.

Sometimes rap even takes precedence over rock/metal, like on 'Killin' It', without any musicality or creativity, or on the verses of 'Nightmare' highlighted by an electro beat that is more or less saved by the chorus.

Generally speaking, we're swimming in the stereotype of the rap/metalcore band: a big sound, a big production, melodic and heavy refrains with high vocals, "motherfucker" or other "fucking" used instead of commas on all the tracks (special mention on 'Enemy'), mawkish lyrics, non-existent originality.

"New Empire, Vol 1" is based on efficiency and immediacy. One listen is more than enough to enter the world of Hollywood Undead. An opus to be put in the hands of rappers who like to mix this music with a hint of metal like the bands Limp Bizkit or Linkin Park could do in their time, but without their originality.

MELODIC HARD ROCK Pleasant and marrying melody and energy, this opus remains too close to his influences to hope to join the leading pack of the genre.
