"The contemplative pop-folk with poetic charms of "Sleepwalking" is the perfect setting for Marjana's divine vocal."

Not long ago, iamthemorning's superb fourth album was released with the famous duet Gleb Kolyadin on piano and Marjana Semkina on vocals. Fans will be delighted to learn that the beautiful Russian is no longer content with this band to propagate her divine voice and that she is embarking on a solo adventure with a first album entitled "Sleepwalking".

The irresistibly charming Venus has once again created fervour around her, judging by the first-rate musicians on this album: Jordan Rudess on piano, Craig Blundell on drums and Nick Beggs on bass. They must not have hesitated long to take part in this collection of titles, each one more pleasant than the other. The quiet and melancholic register close to that of iamthemorning obviously marks the record. It is embodied in the lullaby 'Lost At Sea', soothed with the mermaid songs of Marjana, or in the opaline mists of 'Dark Matter' and 'Ars Longa Vita Brevis', adorned with the crystalline sound of the acoustic guitars and the lyricism of the strings of the St.Petersburg Orchestra.

In a more Wilsonian style with its thick keyboard textures 'Invisible' expresses an intense emotional presence bathed in a strange atmosphere. Next to that the velvet imago tears its cozy chrysalis to take flight and bring an extra dimension to the album. The colours of the butterfly are vivid and the flapping of the wings makes her zigzag between the heart-rending pop 'Am I Sleeping' on the lively piano and the tonic 'Turn Back Time' in Bushian rock mode. Marjana breathes an emancipatory air in beautiful flights that reach the heart with the sublime 'Mermaid Song', the spicy 'Skin' punctuated with pizzicato violins or the too short 'How To Be Alone'.

Far from the duet she forms with Gleb Kolyadin in iamthemorning Marjana, she nonetheless retains the same vocal grace and a similar talent for dreamlike writing. Invariably, whether the compositions in "Sleepwalking" are rather folk or classical with piano dominance, electrified pop or symphonic ballads, the purity of Marjana's songs guide the listener like a charismatic escort through the delights of this contemplative poetry.
