Listening to an Igorrr album is a bit like in a Ferris wheel at the funfair. The contradictory emotions invade us. Fear, excitement, surprise, joy, everything is mixed. Gautier Serre, the man behind the Igorrr project, is a music fairground, in the primary sense of the word, a musician outside of styles. "Spirituality And Distortion" may well be his sixth album, but the experience is as intense as ever. Some people shout out for genius, others call him a bit of a handyman. Gautier Serre is neither. He is first and foremost a freedom-loving musician, who is having a great time in his studio-laboratory, the spiritual son of Devin Townsend, Mike Patton, Ihsahn and Aphex Twin.

So, of course, a carnival is a fairground. And a fair means a merry mess. It is necessary to admit that some tracks are completely delirious: the metal musette of 'Musette Maximum' where the accordion is drowned under the blasts of the drums, the death indus of 'Paranoid Bulldozer Italiano' where wild riffs mix with electro sounds under a flood of double pedal. And yet, everything seems coherent, because under his crazy jack-of-all-trades, Igorrr doesn't compromise with his musical personality and his unbridled madness.

Those who know the previous albums won't be out of place with "Spirituality And Distortion". All the ingredients of Igorrr's musical cuisine are used for an orgy of contrasts and unlikely alliances between oriental music and extreme metal ('Downgrade Desert', 'Overweight Poesy', 'Himalaya Massive Ritual'), baroque music and death metal ('Nervous Waltz', 'Barocco Satani'), atmospheric electro rock and dissonance ('Lost In Introspection'), death metal and 8-bit sounds ('Parpaing'), groove funk and Balkan music ('Kung-Fu Chèvre'). Igorrr uses an impressive amount of different instruments to give substance to his creative delirium and as always he knows how to play vocal contrasts, blending saturated vocals (George Fischer's growl vocals from Cannibal Corpse on the aptly named 'Parpaing') and female vocals, sometimes operatic ('Barocco Satani') and sometimes really fascinating because of their resemblance to Bjork ('Hollow Tree', 'Overweight Poesy').

For those who love originality, controlled madness and artistic freedom beyond musical boundaries, 'Spirituality And Distortion' is almost a flawless work. Hardly can we reproach its length and some less inspired tracks ('Polyphonic Rust') in this deluge of eclecticism and know-how. In any case, you'll come out of listening to this album turned upside down, like after a ride in a rollercoaster at the funfair.

ROCK "Mind Machine A New Experience" is a new intergalactic journey which, if it does not innovate in any way the synthetic and electronic sound explorations, is very pleasant to follow.
