NOISE - 22.07.2009 -
"Back In Blood" is the name of the tenth album of the Finnish band The 69 Eyes. In their 20-year career, the quintet, which has never seen any changes, has made a name for itself in the sphere of rock/metal with Gothic tendencies. Throughout their career, the band has evolved musically, from a punk rock'n'roll influenced by the Stooges and Motörhead to a more gothic and metallic music in the tradition of an H.I.M. or an O'Negative Type.

The band's previous opus had clearly disappointed by its lack of aggressiveness and more generally by its somewhat easy aspect, FM limit. It is therefore logical that the band has returned to a more raw and aggressive sound and universe with the return to more classic hard rock sounds. All this is confirmed by an explicit album title, a very aggressive cover, almost extreme, and some pretty strong song titles ('Dead Girls Are Easy' for example).

This comeback is very successful as we feel the band at ease in this mix between gothic and hardcore. Moreover, Jyrki Linnankivi's vocals has been put forward in the mix, which is a good thing as the man excels in his art by going from a biting register to purely Gothic passages with equal success. The best example comes from the very good 'We Own The Night', with a purely rock rhythm close to AC/DC and vocals in a vein between Peter Steele (Type O'Negative) and Jim Morrisson for some intonations.

Among the absolutely unstoppable tracks, made for concerts, are 'Kiss Me Undead' with its guitar melody and its wonderful chorus which includes choirs and a splendid Nick Cave style vocals or 'Dead Girls Are Easy', oscillating between rock and gothic to better burst on a very well brought chorus before an excellent solo and a downright heavy ending.

The band calms down a little bit with slower titles, like "Night Watch" and its crooner side or "Hunger" and its sweet piano melodies without forgetting the magnificent final title, "Eternal", based largely on vocals and piano for a divine and profound result.

The 69 Eyes thus signs an excellent album that easily makes you forget the small past wanderings. By rediscovering a certain aggressiveness without losing his melodic and gothic side, he gives himself a great bath of youth with varied compositions. This "Back In Blood" is clearly a comeback in strength designed to seduce a large audience in the rock/metal sphere in general.
